4 days of zodiac navigation and trekking to the San Rafael glacier, with Lotus Belle tent camping and a visit to the historic ruins of the Ofqui canal.
We begin the zodiac navigation from Bahía Exploradores to Laguna San Rafael, cruising past beaches and visiting points of interest along the route. We'll enjoy a picnic-style lunch and arrive at Laguna San Rafael in the afternoon to settle in at the Laguna Caiquenes campsite. Day 2: we spend the full day sailing around Laguna San Rafael, visiting beaches and spotting flora and fauna in the area. In the afternoon we'll enjoy the sunset from the beach or the zodiac, depending on cloud cover and weather. Day 3: we explore the lagoon on foot. We visit the San Rafael glacier viewpoint in the morning, and after a light lunch at the campsite, continue on to the ruins of the Hotel San Rafael — a window into the ambitious colonization project the Chilean State considered in the early 20th century. We then sail toward the area where a canal was once attempted through the Istmo de Ofqui. Day 4: we board the zodiac and begin the return journey, visiting historic sites that complete the story of the canal and the hotel. We arrive at Bahía Exploradores in the afternoon, where the expedition ends. On this program you may spot flora such as coigüe, canelo, nalca, ñirre, ciruelillo and Guaitecas cypress, among others, plus the endemic Hebe salicifolia, found only in Laguna San Rafael National Park. Birds typical of the evergreen forest and fjords, and marine mammals such as leopard seals, elephant seals, and Chilean and southern dolphins.
